Citizen Receives Key to New Habitat for Humanity Home on World Habitat Day

The United Nations has designated the first Monday in October every year as World Habitat Day (WHD) to reflect on the state of human settlements and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. WHD is intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat. WHD celebrations began in 1986, but 2009 marks the first global celebration hosted by the United States. WHD was celebrated in Casper and sponsored cooperatively between the Casper HUD Office and Wyoming Habitat for Humanity affiliates. The Casper event spotlighted efforts to meet the mission of the United Nations and HUD by showcasing newly-constructed Habitat for Humanity homes in Casper, Laramie, Sheridan and Teton County.

At the Casper event, Casper Mayor Kenyne Schlager signed a symbolic key and read the City's Proclamation of October 5, 2009 as WHD in Casper. Bruce Maurer, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity's Casper Affiliate read the acknowledgement of WHD from Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal and U.S. Senator Mike Enzi's representative read his acknowledgement of WHD. HUD Casper Field Office Director Dan Carmon presented the symbolic key to Ms. Dacia Edwards for her new Home in North Casper.

Ms. Edwards shared her experiences and how she helped in the construction of her new home. Her work included installing sheetrock, laying tile, and painting.
