Statement by Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo on Renting to Relatives
The American people want to provide housing assistance to low-income people
in genuine need, but do not want to see their tax dollars wasted. Under a regulation that
takes effect in September, HUD will bar landlords newly entering the Section 8 rental
subsidy program from renting to relatives. I will review this regulation to determine if
it should be tightened further to also bar high-income landlords already in the program
from collecting subsidies for renting to relatives. As part of the review, HUD will
establish guidelines defining "high income." We will not tolerate waste, fraud and abuse in
this or any other HUD program.
