PRESIDENT CLINTON ANNOUNCES $126.8 MILLION IN ASSISTANCE TO HELP PAY RENTS OF OVER 17,000 LOW-INCOME PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
WASHINGTON - President Clinton today announced $126.8 million in rental assistance subsidies to provide affordable housing for more than 17,000 low-income people with disabilities across the nation.
"The rental assistance I'm announcing today will enable low-income people with disabilities to live as independently as possible, in homes of their own choosing rather than in institutions," President Clinton said. "This is a program that dramatically transforms the lives of Americans who need our help to obtain safe and decent housing."
The rental assistance, provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, will pay part of the apartment rent for low-income adults with disabilities, so that their rent is limited to just 30 percent of their income.
"I've met people with disabilities across this nation who would be living very different lives if not for this rental assistance," HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo said. "They have told me this program has kept them out of terribly substandard housing, out of nursing homes, and out of homeless shelters."
The program, called Section 8 Mainstream Housing, will provide subsidies to housing agencies in over 200 communities in 42 states, the District of Columbia and Guam. The housing agencies will distribute the subsidies to low-income people with disabilities who need affordable housing.
