HOUSING AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF CHANUTE, KANSAS -- $30,572

The Chanute Housing Authority plans to use Public Housing Drug Elimination Program grant funds to reduce/eliminate drugs in its Public Housing through hiring a grant coordinator in order to provide the following programs: mentoring, family self-sufficiency, and resident need identification as well as partnering with various community agencies to provide other needed services. The Housing Authority's goal is to serve both adults and youth in all of it public housing properties in order to provide a safe environment.

LAWRENCE HA -- $81,158

The Lawrence Housing Authority's Public Housing Drug Elimination Program will use a comprehensive security and prevention-based program to reduce/eliminate drug-related crime. This approach will incorporate private security patrols and Neighborhood Watch Programs with extensive prevention programs for residents of Edgewood Homes. Activities will include parent education, career development, youth leadership, academic enrichment, and support services. These activities are focused on personal growth and responsibility as key determinants in resisting and overcoming drug use and crime.

ATCHISON HA -- $42,009

The Housing Authority of Atchison's People Learning and Teaching Others (PLATO) Program will combine current management/screening, alternative activities and security measures, with comprehensive drug prevention/intervention programs and contract security provided through the grant to reduce drug-related crimes its developments. The grant will provide drug education, recreation, leadership skills training, parenting classes, resident enhancement, and referrals. All of the programs will be coordinated with local treatment and referral groups, present and future Weed and Seed Program, HUD's One Strike Program, and welfare reforms. Residents at Housing Authority properties will also benefit from the participation of professional athletes. The Housing Authority developments benefiting from these grant funds are the Malls Towers, Lakeview, and Southwoods.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The Kansas City, Kansas Housing Authority will use Public Housing Drug Elimination Grant to fund a) Two two-man security patrols to operate 8 hours per day, five days per week in seven public housing family developments. The patrols will provide needed security to these developments and surrounding neighborhoods during the hours of 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. when drug and other criminal activity in the area is most prevalent; and b) provide for drug prevention summer and after school programs for youth in public housing coordinated through a collaborative partnership between the Housing Authority, KCK School District, Campfire Boys & Girls, 4-H Club, KCK Community College and other local agencies. The youth programs include academic enrichment, social/cultural development, college scholarships and recreational activities for low-income youth. The following developments are targeted: Juniper Gardens, 1980 N. 2nd St.-390 units; St. Margaret's park, 350 Perry Square - 100 units; Cyrus K. Holliday, 1750 S. 37th Ct. - 60 units; Belrose Manor, 2924 W. 40th Ave. - 90 units: Douglas Heights, 1742 S. 40th - 101 units; Grandview Apts. 1240 Ray - 39 units and Chalet Manor, 1601 Birch - 66 units. The total number of families served is approximately 720.
