FY 1999 PHDEP Program Project Summary -- Maine

PORTLAND HA (HOUSING AUTHORITY) $223,459

The Portland housing Authority will use a comprehensive law enforcement and preventive approach to reduce/eliminate drug related crime. Community policing officers will be used to supplement police services over and above local law enforcement baseline services to investigate and arrest drug traffickers operating in our developments. Educational opportunities and youth service programs such as the Education Center and Peer Leader training will also be offered in the four developments These activities will operate in coordination and collaboration with community agencies including the employment and training programs administered by the PHA through other funding sources. This approach will address both the adult and school age population residing in the following PHA communities: Kennedy Park, Sagamore Village, Riverton Park and Front Street.

LEWISTON HA $98,313

The Lewiston Housing Authority seeks funding to continue the development and implementation of innovative strategies to counter the growth of drug activity and violent crime in the Lewiston area and in and around its public housing developments. A program of early intervention with children K-5 funded by the 1997 PHDEP has proved eminently successful in more than 90% of the public housing resident children participating in the drug education program in the public schools for K-5, the creative arts program and the teacher workshop sessions ensure positive reinforcement of the "Drug-Free Lifestyle" agenda. It is proposed by the LHA to sustain the current program and broaden the scope with the following activities: Drug-Free Lifestyle education, Youth Enrichment through creative arts, Teacher Workshops, and Evaluation of Drug Elimination Program Effectiveness.

BRUNSWICK HA $42,229

The Brunswick Housing Authority's Project Turn Around proposes to decrease the level of crime and drugs in the Perryman Drive public housing development through a comprehensive strategy of law enforcement and prevention programs. Partnering with Brunswick Police Department, the Merrymeeting Regional Adult Education Program, Bath-Brunswick Child Care Services, and the Town of Brunswick's Recreational Department, we will replace fear and violence with hope and opportunities.
