FY 1999 PHDEP Program Project Summary -- Michigan

FLINT HC (Housing Commission) --- $274,486

The Flint Housing Commission will implement a collaborative program to deter the problem of drugs and drug-related crime at its housing developments. Program components include private security, computer training, counseling, youth sports, and program administration.

PONTIAC HC --- $174,853

The Pontiac Housing Commission will implement a HUD grant to continue its RESPONSE (Resident Empowerment Services and Programs offered On-site through Networking and Supportive Enhancement) Program. In addition to supplemental police services with the Pontiac Police Department the Housing Commission will undertake 11 other activities to benefit its three housing sites.

DETROIT HC --- $1,344,716

The Detroit Housing Commission through its housing support section will implement additional safety and security measures for its site residents. In addition, prevention measures will target youth crime and drug prevention through various activities.

SAGINAW HC --- $132,404.00

The Saginaw Housing Commission will implement a four pronged program to combat drugs in its housing developments. These four programs are a computer learning center, community policing, parenting program and a college educational program.

ECORSE HC --- $43,988

The Ecorse Housing Commission will maintain and expand its program to reduce drug-related crime. Security cameras, monitoring station, and increased lighting will be utilized to combat drug trafficking.

RIVER ROUGE HC --- $65,982

The River Rouge Housing Commission will continue its comprehensive drug prevention, intervention and referral approach to reduce/eliminate drug use, abuse and related crimes in and around the premises of its sites.

YPSILANTI HC --- $42,888

The Ypsilanti Housing Commission will implement a collaborative drug elimination program to deter illegal drug trafficking in its housing sites. Components include computer learning centers, youth sports, parenting classes, special programs and administration.

ANN ARBOR HC --- $79,399

The Ann Arbor Housing Commission will combine administrative remedies with law enforcement, prevention and intervention programs to reduce substance abuse and related crime in public housing. Approximately 370 adults and youth at four family sites will be targeted for programming.

GRAND RAPIDS HC --- $106,231

The Grand Rapids Housing Commission will operate recreation to reduce risk programs at two of its family sites - Campau Commons and Creston Plaza. Computer learning centers, sports, counseling, homework help and conflict resolution will be offered to housing residents.

ROMULUS HC --- $25,000

The Romulus Housing Commission will combat drugs, crime and illicit behavior through prevention, intervention, education and security measures. Computer learning and youth sports will assist in prevention. Crisis counseling and drug education will assist intervention. Education will be offered through both an on-site computer learning center and tutoring program. The City Police Department will have an on-site presence to deter and intervene with the criminal element.

INKSTER HC --- $188,709

The Inkster Housing Commission will utilize a HUD grant to fight crime in its housing sites. Additional law enforcement services, security devices and hallway monitors will be provided.

LANSING HC --- $206,744

The Lansing Housing Commission will implement a comprehensive, prevention based drug elimination program. Four components will offer community policing, education, recreation and fitness and neighborhood networking.

PORT HURON HC --- $96,774

The Port Huron Housing Commission will implement a drug elimination program with a three-pronged strategy. Community policing, drug intervention and drug prevention components will be offered to housing residents.

Mount Clemens Housing Commission Field Office: Michigan/Detroit
Amount Funded: $63,343 State: Michigan

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The Mount Clemens Housing Commission will fight illegal drug use in its housing developments by providing additional law enforcement services, drug prevention activities and physical improvements for public housing properties.

Benton Harbor Housing Commission

Amount Funded: $77,639 State: Michigan

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The Benton Harbor Housing Commission will implement a comprehensive plan to eliminate drugs and crime in its neighborhoods. Programs include computer education, mentors and career involvement, community policing, and physical improvements.
