FY 1999 PHDEP Program Project Summary -- Nebraska

HOUSING AUTHORITY OF OMAHA --- $595,379

The 1999 Public Housing Drug Elimination Program (PHDEP) of the Omaha Housing Authority combines strengthened security presence and a wide array of prevention and intervention programs aimed at reducing drug use and drug-related crime among its 5,600 public housing residents. Under the 1999 PHDEP, certified law enforcement officers will be hired to patrol the Housing Authority's three family developments and its 12 high rise developments during nighttime hours. Additional lighting will also be installed at the family developments. A number of recreational, cultural, and leadership programs will be offered to youth ages 6-18 at the Housing Authority's recreation facility in South Omaha, the LaFern Williams Center, and transportation from job training, interviews, and places of employment will be provided, The Housing Authority will also, for the first time, provide resources directly to resident organizations in the form of "mini-grants" (grants up to $2,000) to enable residents to organize their own security and drug prevention activities.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The Housing Authority of the County of Scotts Bluff will use a comprehensive security and preventive-based approach to reduce/eliminate drug-related crime. Through intensive collaboration with Housing Authority residents, community resource agencies, staff and law enforcement, the Housing Authority's team has developed a plan to combat crime, drugs, and violence in their community. The 1999 Drug Elimination Grant will build upon the successes of previous programs and continue above base-line law enforcement, provide additional lighting for better security, provide transportation and programs at Carpenter Center aimed at preventative education. These efforts to curb crime by preventive measures provide for a safer community for all.
