1999 Multifamily Housing Drug Elimination Grants

PROJECT NAME: Bigby Villa Apartments

GRANT AMOUNT: $125,000

SUMMARY: Bigby Willa will combine a two-pronged approach to reduce and eliminate drug-related crime in the development. The first prong involves drug prevention and intervention programs. Grant funds would fund a full-time drug prevention, education and referral program administered by the Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission. The second prong relates to development of needed physical improvements to enhance security. Preimeter fencing and pedestrian and traffic control gates would be installed as well as physical improvements for enhanced security within the development. A major focus of the effort is to enhance resident awareness and participation for improving safety and security in the neighborhood and to relate in a direct manner to the New Approach Anti-Drug Program presently underway in the area.

SUMMARY: Westgate Gardens will combine a two-pronged approach to reduce and eliminate drug-related crime in the development. the first prong involves drug prevention, education and intervention programs. Upgraded lighting would be installed as well to improve overall security within the development. GRANT AMOUNT: $125,000

SUMMARY: Program grant funds will be used to address drug-related criminal activity and to improve the quality of life by the residents of the 300 unit Ujima Village family housing development in unincorporated South Los Angeles County. Programs will include drug abuse prevention, intervention, employment referral services and academic, recreation, and training program operated at the Ujima Village Family Resource Center and Family Learning Center.

GRANT AMOUNT: $125,000

SUMMARY: A three pronged approach to attacking drug elimination at St. John's Apartments is proposed: Neighborhood Networks to effectively train and empower both older adults, young adults and teenagers to qualify for entry level positions. Non-Duplicating Card Entry System will be installed on the existing vehicle gates at the front and rear of property to create an undesirable atmosphere for drug traffickers trying to enter the complex. Security lighting - added sensor lighting as well as additional interior grounds lighting is activated by sensing movement, therefore allowing law enforcement officers to instantly locate intruders.

GRANT AMOUNT: $125,000

SUMMARY: The San Diego Housing Commission's Multifamily Drug Elimination Program will use a comprehensive security and prevention-based approach to reduce/eliminate drug and gang-related crime at the University Canyon complex. To combat crime, security lighting will be installed on each building and in the areas of the complex that provide cover for drug dealing and use. Prevention programs will include: education and career development; computer literacy; tutoring; sports and recreation programs; a teen talk show dealing with drug and gang issues, produced by and for teens; family counseling and support; and resident council and community development.

RECIPIENT: Area Housing Authority of the County of Ventura
PROJECT NAME: Los Arboles
PROJECT STREET: 801-886 Calle Haya
GRANT AMOUNT: $76,528

SUMMARY: As part of our overall strategy to eliminate drug use and drug-related criminal activity in publicly assisted housing, the Area Housing Authority of the County of Ventura proposes new partnerships with youth-activity providers for the residents of the Los Arboles Apartments. Drug prevention strategies through alternative youth activities are the primary focus of our application. The constructive activities, positive alternatives to the drug environment, and social support improvement of safety within the complex through better lighting conditions and enhanced perimeter security.
