1999 Multifamily Housing Drug Elimination GrantsWashington, DC 20009RECIPIENT: Fourteenth Street Associates PROJECT NAME: Columbia Heights Village Apartments PROJECT STREET: 2900 14th Street NW GRANT AMOUNT: $125,000 SUMMARY: The plan for drug elimination at Columbia Heights Village Apartments consists of four inter-related program components that combine with physical improvements to provide a safer living environment and reduce drug abuse and drug related crime. First, the existing After-School and Summer Programs for children ages 6-12 will be expanded to include life skills training, community service projects, recreational activities and greater parent involvement. Second, a youth prevention program (for ages 13-18) will be created to foster individual development, constructive peer relationships, and community-building. For youth who are currently abusing drugs, an outreach component will be developed and coordinated by an experienced Youth Worker. Third, a family support component will be initiated to provide drug intervention services, parent coaching, job readiness and placement, and case management for parents of participants in the children's and youth programs. Fourth, resident-led citizen patrol and neighborhood watch programs will be established, with the assistance of the 4th District Police, to increase security, deter crime, and provide an access point to prevention and intervention services. Installation of an electronic door opening system to enhance the building door intercom system in the garden apartments of Columbia heights Village will provide safer entry for visitors of the residents. Outdoor lighting will be increased as an important additional measure of security. This comprehensive approach will provide a continuum of prevention and intervention services and will increase overall safety and security of the development.
Washington, DC 20020 SUMMARY: The plan of the Parkchester I Apartments Drug Elimination Grant application is to reduce drugs and drug related criminal activity and increase the quality of life for the residents and surrounding neighborhood with the installation of iron fencing, security entrance doors for all buildings, exterior, lighting and vandal proof security window screens. In addition, the information of a Crime Watch Coucil, a Service Provider Network will coordinate, access and partnership current available drug prevention and provide employable skills to the residents through a Neighborhood Networks center (Computer Learning Center).
