1999 Multifamily Housing Drug Elimination Grants

SUMMARY: Vermont Housing Enterprises, Inc. will use a comprehensive, family-based approach to reduce/eliminate drug related crime in and around Templeton Court Apartments in White River Junction, VT. Grant funds will be used to create the Templeton Court Family Center; thus allowing community programs to be brought to the property, add recreational facilities to the property and connect the property youth with community programs. Additionally, this grant will foster the community partnership which have been established over recent years with local agencies such as the Hartford police, social service agencies, Hartford recreation department, Hartford school district and faith-based organizations.

SUMMARY: The programs of this grant will provide the residents in these neighborhoods with a variety of opportunities for economic, civic, family, and personal growth. Through the development of incorporated Resident Organizations, with subsequent programs developed by them; through employment training and placement; a computer training center to prepare residents for the marketplace; comprehensive and intensive drug prevention programs; highly trained Resident Services Coordinator interventions and organization of external programs; a community room facility that welcomes in the surrounding neighborhood; and other innovative, citizen centered programming, this approach presents residents with ever greater opportunities to change the drug related problems that plague their lives and their neighborhood. This kind of programming effectively works to eliminate drug use and related crime because such activities are unappealing, unacceptable, and unlikely in strong, healthy individuals and neighborhoods.
