1999 New Approach Drug Elimination Grants

Casa Community Association $102,824
Los Angeles, California

Casa Community Association (CCA) has been awarded $102,824.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will partner with local and Federal law enforcement to provide a comprehensive, coordinated, neighborhood approach to eliminating drugs and other crime problems within the neighborhood surrounding the Casa apartment complex. The law enforcement component of this grant application provides additional resources to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). This grant will provide additional law enforcement equipment to identify, analyze and track drug-related crimes, drug traffickers, and gangs. Ultimately, through the use of state of the art technology, the LAPD will be able to significantly enhance the efficiency of the taskforce, allowing more officers and agents to identify, target, and apprehend criminals involved in the drug trade.


Chinatown Community Development Center $235,950
San Francisco, California

The Chinatown Community Development has been awarded $235,950.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will provide a comprehensive, coordinated neighborhood approach to eliminate drugs and other crime problems in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. The New Approach consists of four components to abate drug-related crime: (1) Augmented community policing and undercover police investigations of drug-related crimes; (2) Augmented joint police and District Attorney activities to prosecute criminals; (3) Community education/training and activities to bring together the community and law enforcement officials on developing effective drug abatement strategies; (4) Capital improvements to increase security at 5 targeted assisted housing developments in the neighborhood.


LA Gardens Community Association $250,000
Los Angeles, California

LA Gardens Community Association has been awarded $250,000.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will partner with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the FBI, and a special joint taskforce of both agencies to provide a comprehensive, coordinated neighborhood approach to eliminate drugs and other crime problems in the neighborhood surrounding the Casa Apartment Complex. This grant will provide additional law enforcement equipment to identify, analyze and track drug-related crimes, drug traffickers, and gangs. Ultimately, through the use of state-of-the-art technology, the FBI and LAPD will be able to significantly enhance the efficiency of the taskforce, allowing more officers and agents to identify, target, and apprehend criminals involved in the drug trade.


Los Angeles County Housing Development Corporation $250,000
Los Angeles, California

The Los Angeles County Housing Development Corporation has been awarded $250,000.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will partner with the Community Policing Program to provide a comprehensive, coordinated, neighborhood approach to eliminate drugs and other crime problems in Cannon Apartments. Funds are targeted for narcotics and gang investigations. Also, funds are designated to enhance physical security at the site, through security fencing and lighting.


Mercy Charities Housing $207,000
Ashland, California

Mercy Charities Housing California (and its property management affiliate Mercy Services Corporation) has been awarded $207,000.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will partner with the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, and the Alameda County Housing & Community Development Department to provide a comprehensive and coordinated plan to eliminate drugs and other crime problems in the Ashland neighborhood. The focus of the program is the establishment of a Sheriff sub-station in the two assisted housing developments to coordinate crime prevention and education efforts in these complexes and the larger neighborhood.
