1999 New Approach Drug Elimination Grants

Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation $250,000
Boston, Massachusetts

Dorchester Bay Economic Development has been awarded $250,000.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will partner with New World Security and the Boston Police Department to provide a comprehensive, coordinated neighborhood approach to eliminate drugs and other crime problems in the area. The funds will be used to install fifteen additional exterior video cameras at the scattered site assisted housing developments of Dorcester Bay Economic Development Corporation. The Boston Police Department is committing additional drug investigation time and patrol hours to problem areas identified through the monitoring.


Harbor Point Community Task Force/Corcoran Mullins Jennison $243,100
Dorchester, Massachusetts

The Harbor Point Community Task Force, a resident council and owners of Harbor Point Apartments, has been awarded $243,100.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will provide a comprehensive, coordinated neighborhood approach to eliminate drugs and other crime problems in the neighborhood. Funds will be used to: 1) enhance community safety by installing security cameras in buildings and high crime activity areas; 2) hire "community police officers" to work as liaisons between security and residents to implement community policing strategies; and 3) form the Harbor Point Anti-Drug Alliance among the Boston Police, the District Attorney's Office, the Harbor Point Community Task Force, Harbor Point Management, and Harbor Point Security to rid the community of drugs and drug-related crime.


Jarvis Heights Apartments/Marken Properties $198,916
Holyoke, Massachusetts

Jarvis Heights and its management company, Marken Properties has been awarded $198,916.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will partner with the local police department to provide a comprehensive, coordinated, neighborhood approach to eliminate drugs and other crime problem in and around its targeted housing developments. The grant will be used to combat and deter gang violence, drug trafficking, vandalism, and other criminal activities in and around the properties. Marken Properties will use these funds to provide bright lighting for streets, alleys, and parking lots around the buildings; security fencing in strategic places; and security cameras, doors and locks in our buildings. Grant funds will be used to employ the local police department and security guards to patrol buildings and the surrounding neighborhoods.


Nueva Esparanza, Incorporated $89,100
Holyoke, Massachusetts

Nueva Esparanza Incorporated has been awarded $89,100.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will partner with the local police department to provide a comprehensive, coordinated, neighborhood approach to eliminate drugs and other crime problem in and around its neighborhood. The proposal is sponsored by the Nueva Esperanza for the Voces de Esperanza Housing Development in the Churchill Neighborhood of Holyoke. The funds shall be used to : reduce the amount of unreported crime, provide additional community policing services in and around the property, engage residents in security and property upkeep, install security related improvements and make improvements to a Community Police Substation.


Sargent West Associates $178,000
Holyoke, Massachusetts

Sargent West Apartments has been awarded $178,000.00 under the New Approach Anti-Drug Program and will partner with the Holyoke Police Department to provide a comprehensive, coordinated neighborhood approach to eliminate drugs and other crime problems in the Churchhill Neighborhood. The funds provide: bright lighting for streets, alleys and parking lots around the buildings; security fencing in strategic places; and security cameras, doors and locks in the buildings. In addition, the funds will provide for the local police department and security guards to patrol the buildings and the surrounding neighborhood.
