WASHINGTON - Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo today awarded $15.6 million in grants to help an estimated 50,000 public housing residents across the country get jobs and become self-supporting.

"Creating job opportunities for public housing residents can change their lives dramatically," Cuomo said. "They can work their way out of poverty and out of dependency to build better futures for their families."

Cuomo said HUD will award an additional $23.5 million in grants under the Economic Development and Supportive Services Program to more housing authorities later this year.

The grants announced today will go to public housing residents in 29 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico in these amounts: Alaska - $139,745; California -- $567,253; Connecticut -- $330,886; Delaware -- $100,000; District of Columbia -- $349,900; Florida -- $278,515; Georgia -- $399,790; Idaho -- $72,000; Illinois -- $150,000; Indiana -- $597,000; Kansas -- $132,000; Kentucky -- $323,500; Louisiana -- $714,950; Maine -- $47,750; Massachusetts -- $1,950,000; Minnesota -- $219,900; Mississippi -- $629,997; Montana -- $504,250; Nevada -- $149,934; New Jersey -- $690,000; New York -- $359,000; North Carolina -- $188,400; Ohio -- $1,798,000; Oklahoma -- $704,750; Pennsylvania -- $1,493,775; Puerto Rico -- $1.2 million; South Carolina -- $55,750; Texas -- $822,000; Virginia -- $250,000; Washington State -- $276,566; Wisconsin -- $110,000.

The grants were awarded under two programs:

  • $8.6 million to 45 public housing authorities under the Economic Development and Supportive Services Program. The grants will help public housing residents get jobs by funding job training and job placement, childcare, transportation to jobs, education programs, and loans and training to help public housing residents start small businesses. The grants will also fund programs for elderly residents and people with disabilities to help them live independently.

  • $7 million to 77 public housing resident organizations under the Tenant Opportunities Program. These grants help public housing residents get jobs by funding activities including: job training and placement, small business development, general equivalency diploma and literacy training programs, parental skills training, health and nutrition training, youth development workshops, and substance abuse counseling. The program encourages the creation of businesses owned by and employing public housing residents. The resident businesses can create jobs for public housing residents to perform maintenance, management, and financial services for the local housing authority.
