CUOMO AWARDS $9 MILLION IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT GRANTS TO 20 HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES FISCAL YEAR 1999 GRANT AWARDS WASHINGTON - Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo today awarded $9 million to 20 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to revitalize distressed neighborhoods near their campuses by expanding the supply of affordable housing, creating jobs and job training, and helping businesses develop. Cuomo announced the grants at a conference sponsored by the White House Initiative on HBCUs in observance of National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week this week. "Historically black colleges and universities have made an enormous contribution to America as outstanding educational institutions and as a force for change to improve our nation," Cuomo said. "These grants will help these colleges continue this proud tradition by building stronger communities and better lives for their neighbors." The 20 schools are located in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC. The grants were awarded in a competitive process, with 57 applicants vying for funding. Grant recipients are:
Of this year's 20 grant winners, five institutions are receiving money under the program for the first time: Bishop State C.C. in AL; Bethune-Cookman College in FL; Morehouse College in GA; Texas College; and, West Virginia State University.
