HUD Archives: News Releases
COMMENTS FROM RHODE ISLAND ELECTED OFFICIALS ON HUD LEAD HAZARD GRANTS Senator Jack Reed - "Childhood lead poisoning has had a devastating effect on children in Rhode Island and throughout the nation. These funds will help us ensure that lead exposure is reduced and more houses are made lead-safe." Senator John H. Chafee - "I'm extremely pleased that the Secretary has decided to make these lead paint abatement awards to the city of Providence and to the state of Rhode Island. This badly needed federal assistance will pave the way for a redoubling of our efforts to tackle this lead paint crisis." Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy - "Providence and the state of Rhode Island have already spent a large amount of money to make 'Healthy Homes.' This grant will go a long way in continuing this work to protect those most vulnerable, including children and families. I congratulate the city, state, and HUD on making this grant possible." Congressman Bob Weygand - "The effect on our children from lead poisoning is not only devastating but tragic as well. It doesn't have to happen. These grants will enable homeowners, especially those with young families, to not only learn about ways in which they can abate lead hazards, but to actually make their homes safe." Governor Lincoln Almond - "I am proud to say Rhode Island is taking an aggressive approach to eliminating lead exposure and we are making progress. These funds, coupled with the money the state has committed, will enable us to continue our efforts to eradicate the lead threat to children and its harmful side effects." Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci, Jr. - "We are deeply pleased to be recognized by Secretary Cuomo and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with this grant and are anxious to launch Providence's Citywide Lead Abatement Program. We are deeply thankful for the opportunity HUD is giving us to change the course of the future for so many Providence residents, and ultimately preserve untold numbers of lives through prevention, education and assistance."
