Rural Housing and Economic Development 1999 Grants

PROJECT SUMMARY: FLORIDA

Everglades Community Association, Inc., in Homestead, FL, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $500,000. The group will use the grant for phase 2 of a mixed-use community, known as Everglades Farmworker Village for agricultural workers. This area is being rebuilt as a result of Hurricane Andrew. Phase 2 includes 161 units of housing, a 160 child Head Start Center, 13,806 square feet of neighborhood retail center, public park space and a homework assistance center. The RHED grant would fund construction and management of the 161 rental units and construction of the 13,806 square feet of retail space. Phase 2 leverages over $16 million in loans and grants and is expected to create 18 jobs at the retail center. Phase 1 is complete and is a $21.6 million, 54-acre development including 239 single-family and duplex units, a child care center, a community health clinic, and management offices.
