Rural Housing and Economic Development 1999 Grants

PROJECT SUMMARY: MAINE

Eastern Maine Development Corporation, in Bangor, ME, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant for Piscataquis County in the amount of $129,500. The grant will be used to assist the Eastern Maine Development Corporation establish a sustainable, prosperous home based business industry. An economic development impact study and a directory of home based businesses will be completed to promote the region's assets to business investors and build the local tourist industry. It is anticipated that new businesses and jobs will be created which will foster economic opportunities for low/moderate income people, the unemployed and the underemployed in the region. In-kind leveraging resources total $238,500 in support of this program. Key participants include: Eastern Maine Development Corporation, Piscataquis County Economic Development Council, SBA, EDA, State of Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, Maine Arts Commission, and the Ford Foundation.
