Rural Housing and Economic Development 1999 Grants

PROJECT SUMMARY: NORTH CAROLINA

Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe, in Hollister, NC, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $250,000. Funds will be used to hire a Project Coordinator and staff to develop innovative economic development activities including the Turtle Island: Native America USA project, an educational center for Native American culture and a family recreation destination. Approximately 100 permanent jobs and 500 in-direct jobs will be created This program will serve Tribal members located in Halifax and Warren counties. In-kind leveraging resources total $219,750 in support of this program. Key participants include: North Carolina State University School of Design, Presnell Group, Arthur Anderson L.L.P., North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs, North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center, Kilpatrick Stockton LLP and Halifaz Electric Membership Corporation.
