Rural Housing and Economic Development 1999 GrantsPROJECT SUMMARY: NEBRASKA North Central Nebraska Resource Conservation Development and Planning Council in Basset, NE, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $237,800. Funding for three years will allow the Council to continue to provide economic and community development services, organizational structuring, and regional promotion. The Council will utilize funding to assist in: business retention and expansion; small business development; labor recruitment; strategic planning; grant writing; planning and research for the creation of a permanent Outback Initiative; and the promotion of Nebraska's Outback. This program will serve Boyd, Brown, Cherry, Holt, Keya Paha, and Rock Counties. In-kind leveraging resources total $99,600 in support of this program. Central Nebraska Community Services, Inc. in Loup City, NE, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $195,632. The applicant proposes to plan and implement a professional residential energy audit and energy conservation education program. Seed support will allow the Central Nebraska Community Services, Inc. to increase residential energy efficiency among low- to moderate-income households. Start up activities, operational costs for audit completion, conservation education, and counseling to match households with financial resources will be provided. This program will serve 21 counties in central Nebraska. In-kind leveraging resources from the Nebraska Energy Office total $120,360 in support of this program. Contact Person: Jose Zapata
Native Council on Economic and Community Development Corp., in Walthill, NE, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $150,000. The goal of their project is to insure that homeownership opportunities continue to members of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska by providing organizational capacity building. The grant will be used to: hire a program developer who will assist the organization in the procurement of additional funds for further housing development initiatives; hire consultant who will assist the Board of Directors in the development of a renewed Strategic Plan; provide a Board of Directors training session; and conduct an updated Housing Study Needs Assessment of the Omaha Reservation, which includes Burt, Cuming, and Thurston counties.
