Rural Housing and Economic Development 1999 Grants

PROJECT SUMMARY: VIRGINIA

Virginia Eastern Shore Economic Empowerment and Housing Corporation, in Nassawadox, VA, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $175,000. The group will use the grant to create a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) to serve low-income persons in the Eastern Shore communities. Among its various activities, the CDFI will be able to make low-interest rate loans, counsel and support the efforts of entrepreneurs, and partner with Federal, state and local government agencies and banks to meet the Eastern Shore's needs for affordable housing, safe drinking water and effective water waste treatment.

The Virginia Eastern Shore Economic Empowerment and Housing Corporation (VESEEHC) will also receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $115,000. The funds will be used to hire a Chief Operating Officer, who will assist the Executive Director with organizational, program, and financial management, and to complete the installation of a state-of -the-art fund accounting system. This program will serve Accomack and Northampton Counties, which are located at the southern tip of the DelMarVa Peninsula. In-kind leveraging resources supporting this program total over $85,000.
