Rural Housing and Economic Development 1999 Grants

PROJECT SUMMARY: WEST VIRGINIA

Mountain Partners in Community Development (MPCD), in Elkins, WV, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $151,701. As the only Community Development Corporation (CDC) in the northern half of West Virginia, this funding will enable the applicant to expand its current programming efforts in response to increasing requests for assistance. MPCD will utilize the funding to improve the economic health indicators of Randolph, Barbour and Tucker counties by cultivating new community and economic development opportunities in each. The group will work with many local groups to carry out several activities, including the development and promotion of local Civil War sites for tourism; the renovation of the Delmonte Hotel office and retail space; the establishment of a food cooperative; the creation of a Community Arts Center; the provision of technical assistance in the area of telecommunications infrastructure development; and the overall strengthening of organizational capacity in the region. In-kind leveraging resources supporting these activities total $91,000. Key participants include: the State Development Office and Allegheny Power Economic Development.
