Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project SummariesArizonaThe Town of Guadalupe, AZ will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $399,950. The 22 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build 12 new homes that are located in the Town of Guadalupe. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $123,642 in support of this program. Key participants include: Rio Salado Community College, Arizona Head Start Association, South Mountain Community College, Metro Consulting, Stardust Building Supplies, and many more.The Town of Guadalupe was incorporated in 1975, but was founded around the turn of the century by Yaqui Indians. Today the population is composed of approximately 50% Yaqui Indians and 50% Latino, mostly Mexican Americans. Guadalupe is the poorest community in Maricopa County and one of the poorest in Arizona with 20-35% for residents over 17 years of age. Per capita income for Guadalupe is $4,939 compared to $14,970 for the County. Contact Person: Mary E. The 15 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build rehabilitate three single family homes for low and moderate income elderly persons. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $73,645 to support the program. Key participants include: Human Services System, Inc., City of West Memphis Community Development Agency, West Memphis School District, West Memphis junior Auxiliary, Inc., Turrell School District and the City of West Memphis.
