Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project Summaries

Co-Opportunity, Inc., in Hartford, CT, will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $650,000. The organization was a 1997-1998 recipient of a Youthbuild Grant. The program includes two consecutive comprehensive training cycles of 40 weeks with 20 trainees enrolled in each cycle. One year of post-graduation support will follow each cycle. The program is based at their state of the art Youthbuild training facility, which has 7,500 square feet of floor space. It is located at 117 Murphy Road and has a woodworking shop and computer lab that teaches trainees manufacturing technology. The Youthbuild participants will be involved with all aspects of site preparation and construction of 10 single family houses as part of the Rice Heights housing development. The participants will be provided a comprehensive and integrated program which will increase their academic, leadership, and vocational skill levels. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $1,446,588 in support of the program.. Co-Opportunity, Inc.'s partners include: City of Hartford, Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development and its General Contractor, Home Depot, Carpenters' Local #43, Hartford Housing Authority, Capitol Region Education Council, Hartford Department of Human Services, the Sheldon/Charter Oak Neighborhood Resource Center, Community Health Services, the PROGRESS Welfare-to-Work Consortium and Hartford Adult Education.

The City of New Britain, New Britain, CT: The City of New Britain will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $400,000. The 21 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build 3-single family homes with 3 or 4 bedrooms.

The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $77,965 in support of this program. Key participants include: Boys & Girls Club, Human Resources Agency, and the Mid-Connecticut Workforce Development.
