Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project Summaries

Arch Training Center Inc., Washington, DC will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $650,000. The 45 participants in the Washington DC Enterprise Zone will be learning on-site construction skills by working to rehabilitate 3 single family homes. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $365,890 to support the program. Key participants include: Arch Family Services Corporation, LISC, Covenant House Washington, DC Public Schools, DC Department of Employment Services, DC Department of Human Services, and Punch Out Specialist Team, Frederick Douglas Parent Center, CTNI, Metropolitan Boys and Girls Clubs, Washington Building Congress, Associated builders and Contractors.

Sasha Bruce Youthwork, Inc., Washington, DC will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $400,000. The 30 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build 6 townhomes and rehabilitate 2 townhomes which will be sold to low and moderate income families in the Enterprise Zone. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $235,177 to support the program. Key participants include: Joint Carpentry Apprenticeship Committee of Washington, DC and Vicinity, DC Habitat for Humanity, Davis Memorial Goodwill Industries, Washington Free Clinic, JHP Inc., DC Central Kitchen, Meet the Challenge, Family Therapy Practice Center of Washington, DC, Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, Consortium for Youth Services, Inc., City Lights School.

The Latin America Youth Center, Washington, DC, will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $399,890. The 25 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to rehabilitate a four-unit building. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $662,818 in support of this program. Key participants include: D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development, D.C. Department of Employment Services, D.C. Office Early Childhood Development, Capital Area Asset Building Corp., Maycroft LLC, Youthbuild USA Americorp Project, Youthbuild USA, U.S. Department of Labor through Youthbuild USA, and the Walton Family Foundation.
