Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project SummariesFloridaCareer Options of Pinellas, Inc., Clearwater, FL , will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $400,000. The 21 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build one new single family home which will be sold to a low and moderate income family. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $281,130 to support the program. Key participants include: Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security-District 4, Boley Centers for Behavioral Health Care Inc., Family Service Centers, Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinellas County, Pinellas Area Counsel of Boy Scouts of America, Inc., West Central Florida Council, BSA, Pinellas Regional Workforce Development Board, Pinellas County School Board, City of St. Petersburg and Youthbuild St. Petersburg Management Committee.

The 17 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build 3 houses. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $108,700 in support of this program. Key participants include: Alachua Habitat for Humanity, University of Florida Rinker School of Building Construction, Loften High School, U.F. Center for Construction and Environment, Shimberg Center for Affordable Housing, Santa Fe Community College JTPA Program, and many more. Contact Person: Dr. Sally Lawrence Phone Number: (352) 371-3180 The YWCA of Greater Miami & Dade County, Inc., Miami, FL: The YWCA of Greater Miami & Dade County, Inc., founded in 1919, will receive a Youthbuild (YB) Implementation Grant in the amount of $300,000. This is the first time the organization has received YB funding. The YWCA's participant recruitment efforts are targeted to attract young people, ages 16-24, 75% of whom are high school dropouts and are members of very low-income families. The participant recruitment area is the Overtown community located within the boundaries of the City of Miami. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. The 15 selected participants will also be learning on-site construction skills by working to rehabilitate five (5) low income apartment units owned by the Miami-Dade Housing Agency (MDHA). The units are all located in the recently designated Miami-Dade County Empowerment Zone. Key participants include: the Miami Skills Center and Miami-Dade Housing Agency.
