Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project Summaries

City and County of Honolulu's Department of Community Services, Honolulu, HI: The City and County of Honolulu's Department of Community Services will use a $350,000 Youthbuild Implementation Grant to provide leadership skills, college readiness, career counseling, and on-site construction training to 40 Youthbuild trainees from the Weed and Seed area of Honolulu and Ewa Villages. The trainees will learn on-site construction skills by working to build 15 single-family homes for low-income families in Ewa Villages.

As the lead organization, the City's Department of Community Services' Office of Special Projects will be responsible for coordination of all implementation grant activities. Key partners include WorkHawaii, Honolulu Community College, the City's Department of Budget, and the Friends of Malaekahana. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $403,188 in support of this project. The program will afford the participants the opportunity to improve their lives and the lives of the economically disadvantaged.
