Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project Summaries

Emerson Park Development Corporation, East St. Louis, Illinois will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $300,000. The 30 participants in the Empowerment Zone will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build two single family homes which will be sold to low and moderate income families. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $354,000 to support the program. Key participants include: East St. Louis Community Action Network, University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service, Belleville Area College, University of Illinois Neighborhood Technical Assistance Center, University of Illinois, East St. Louis Action Research Project, St. Clair County, Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation, Anne E. Casey Foundation, Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House, Neighborhood Faith Based Housing Program and the CDBG Operations Corporation.

The Comprehensive Community Solutions, Inc., Rockford, IL: The Comprehensive Community Solutions, Inc., will use a $650,000 Youthbuild Implementation Grant to recruit 45 participants for the purpose of learning academic and on-site construction skills. The youth will be working to build 3 single-family homes. The houses are located within the Empowerment Zone in Rockford, Illinois and will be owned by low income residents. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort of increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of the trainees. Another important goal of this program is to improve the skills of these at risk youth to build confidence and give the trainees a sense of community. The proposed cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $893,941 in support of this program. Key participants include: City of Rockford, IL, National City Community Development Association, American Red Cross, Winnebago County Health Department, Rock Valley College, University of Illinois, and the National Development Council along with a host of other organizations and businesses who are committed to the success of this project.
