Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project Summaries

Kentucky

The Community Action Council for Lexington-Fayette, Bourbon, Harrison and Nicholas Counties (The Council), Lexington, KY will receive a $300,000 Youthbuild Implementation Grant. The 21 at risk youth recruited for this proposal will be learning on-site construction skills by working to construct four single-family homes targeted for low to very low income persons. The program will give participants experience in achieving the academic and vocational skills necessary to compete in the construction trade. The knowledge gained by the trainees will promote a sense of community and improve the lives of the economically disadvantaged. Trainees will share in the 35-week program with the goal of working to fill the need for affordable housing. The applicant's partners have the experience and ability to achieve the success in this program. The comprehensive and integrated effort that will go into this proposal to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees will bring about the success of this program. Key participants and supporters include: Central Kentucky Technical College, The Urban League of Lexington, LexLinc, Habitat for Humanity, Metro Group Homes, Inc., Ball Homes, Inc., Home Builders Association of Lexington and the Lexington Housing Authority. The proposed cash and in-kind leveraging resources will total $495,287 in support of this program.
