Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project Summaries

Youthbuild Boston Inc., Boston, MA a private, non-profit, community based organization founded in 1990, will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $650,000. YouthBuild Boston has previously received awards in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998.

The organization's recruitment efforts are targeted to attract a group of young people ages 16-24, 75% of which are high school dropouts and a member of a very low-income family. A large portion of the participant recruitment area is located in the recently designated Empowerment Zone.

The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. The 50 selected participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to rehabilitate a three story, three family residence.

The total cost of the YouthBuild Boston program is $1,290,000. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $590,000 in support of this program.

The Old Colony Y Services Corporation, Brockton, MA will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $400,000. The 28 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build two; three-bedroom single family homes for families in the Brockton Housing Authority's self sufficiency program. The applicant's Youthbuild program will provide a comprehensive and integrated curriculum to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of the trainees. The success of this proposal will be based on the applicant's ability achieve its goal. With that in mind, their key partners and supporters are prepared to commit their resources. The proposed cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $1,098,720. Those key participants and supporters include: The City of Brockton, Brockton Housing Authority, Brockton Neighborhood Health Center, Brockton Area Private Industry Council, Brockton Coalition for the Homeless, Massachusetts YouthBuild Coalition, Department of Transitional Assistance, Builder's Association of Greater Boston, Massassoit Community College and the Mayor's Office. There is also a host of supporting companies and organizations such as Southeastern Technical School, WearGuard, WomansPlace Crisis Center, LensCrafters, Brockton Area Multi-Services, along with several others.

Just A Start Corporation, Cambridge, MA: Just A Start Corporation (JAS) will use a $395,485 Youthbuild Implementation Grant to provide comprehensive academic, leadership, and vocational training to 55 youth from the cities of Cambridge, Somerville, Chelsea, and Boston. The trainees will learn on-site construction skills by working to construct 11 new townhouse condominiums and rehabilitating a vacant single-family home. All 12 units of housing will be sold to very low income, first-time homebuyers.

As the lead organization, JAS will work with Americorps, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Youthbuild, and the Cambridge Housing Authority to create a positive experience for the applicants. These partners will provide a total of $468,750 in support of this project. JAS has conducted Youthbuild programs for the past five years. This Youthbuild implementation will include a new "Transition to Careers" component and an Alumni Program.

The People Acting in Community Endeavors, Inc., New Bedford, Mass: The People Acting in Community Endeavors, Inc., a prior Youthbuild Grant recipient, will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $400,000. The 45 trainees will be learning on-site skills by reconstructing abandon buildings. They will receive comprehensive training which will include academic and leadership skills. Cash and/or in-kind leveraging resources totaled $518,720 in support of this program. Key participants include: Corporation for National Service, Massachusetts Department of Education .

Mass Job Training, Incorporated, Worcester, MA will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant for $399,794. The 14 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build a three-bedroom single family home. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. This Youthbuild grant will be utilized in a new construction project within the Oak Hill community, for sale to a first time low income homebuyer. Mass Job Training Inc. is the lead in this proposal along with experienced partners to assist in making this a positive experience for the trainees. The partners are Friendly House Neighborhood Center and Oak Hill Community Development Corporation (CDC) and the City Manager's Office of Planning and Community Development (OPCD) along with many resource and service organizations that will be supporting the trainees.
