Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project Summaries

Michigan

Washtenaw County, MI, Ann Arbor, MI will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $400,000. The 25 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build two single family homes which will be sold to low and moderate income families. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $290,900 in support of the program. Key participants include: City of Ypsilanti, JOSHUA, Washtenaw Community Education and Community Services Washtenaw Community Local Building Trades, University Bank, Michigan State University Extension Service, Handi Helpers, Summit Human Care, CMT Ministries, Washtenaw Homebuyers and the Substance Abuse Coordinating Agency of Livingston and Washtenaw Counties.

Young Detroit Builders, Detroit, MI, Young Detroit Builders will be awarded $646,083 in Youthbuild Funds to implement its 5th Youthbuild training cycle. Fifty-six youth will be selected to assist in the construction and rehabilitation of 119 residential rental units in Village I at the Villages at Parkside, a HOPE VI project. Over $1 million in public and private resources have been leveraged in support of the project. Key partners in the project include Capital Needs Unlimited, the Detroit Housing Commission (DHC), the Villages at Parkside, and G. Fisher Construction.
