Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project Summaries

Carver-Scott Educational Cooperative, Chaska, MN: The Carver-Scott Educational Cooperative will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $300,000. In this project, 20 Youthbuild students will participate in the construction of 10 new townhouse units, that are part of a larger affordable housing development for low-income or very low-income families. The entire rental development ultimately will include 72 units of which 18 units will be owned by the Scott County Housing and Redevelopment Authority and operated as public housing. The public housing units will be built in two phases, with Youthbuild funds used in training in the first phase.

Youthbuild participants will have involvement in all aspects of the development, thereby gaining exposure to a broad range of related careers from urban planning to landscape architecture. The program includes an educational curriculum which incorporates the essential academic areas and the construction trades skills, on-site training, leadership development, and supportive services. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $135,140 in support of this program.
