Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project SummariesOhioImproved Solutions for Urban Systems, Inc., Dayton, OH, will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $400,000 to target low and very low income male and female dropouts living throughout the Dayton, Ohio area, while leveraging $518,356 in community support. The program will consist of both on-site construction training as well as academic and leadership skills. Forty (40) participants will rehabilitate two seriously deteriorated single family homes for sale to low and very low income families. Key participants include Americorps, the Ohio Department of Education, Byrne Memorial Grant, Common Pleas Court (Juvenile Division), and the National Association of remodeling.The applicant has been training young people for seven years and has rehabilitated twelve single family homes during their previous Youthbuild grant period. Leadership training consists of four levels (1) personal leadership, (2) family leadership, (3) Youthbuild leadership and (4) community leadership. Examples of community service include building an 1880's style children's playhouse for the Learning Tree Children's farm and painting a low income elderly couple's home. The applicant has had 146 students from all its programs during the last grant period either employed or in higher education, or both.
Contact Person: Ann Higdon Phone Number: (937) 223-2323 Vinton County Commissioners and Sojourners Care Network, McArthur, OH: The partnership of the Vinton County Commissioners and Sojourners Care Network will utilize a $300,000 Youthbuild grant to create an educational, job training and leadership program for young adults. Emphasis for recruitment efforts will focus on young people most in need of supportive services particularly, foster care youth. Through this 18 month program, 14 young adults will build two, 3 bedroom homes and participate in service learning and leadership projects. Additionally, as part of the service learning component of the program, each participant will work with community agencies to develop, implement, and evaluate a project that will address a community need.
