Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project SummariesPennsylvaniaThe Philadelphia Youth for Change Charter School, Philadelphia, PA will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $650,000. The organization was established in 1992 as Philadelphia Youth for Change and was awarded charter school status in 1997. YouthBuild Philadelphia has previously received awards in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998.The organization's recruitment efforts are targeted to attract a group of young people ages 18-24 who are high school dropouts and are members of low or very low-income families. Twenty-five percent of the YouthBuild participants will be recruited from the Empowerment Zone. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. The 50 selected participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to rehabilitate 14 houses that are located in South, North, and Northwest Philadelphia. The total cost of proposed Youthbuild activities to be undertaken is $3,290,516. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $2,590,516 in support of this program. The organization was previously awarded a YB grant in 1996. The Impact Services YouthBuild program recruitment efforts are targeted to attract a group of young people ages 16-24, 75% of which are high school dropouts and are a member of very low-income families. All of the Impact YouthBuild housing projects are located in the Philadelphia Empowerment Zone and all participants will be recruited through the EZ. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. The 40 selected participants will also be learning on-site construction skills by working to rehabilitate six single family residences. The total cost of the program is $922,485. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $523,400 in support of this program.
Contact Person: Gary Parrocki The Crispus Attucks Community Development Association (CACDC), York, PA a non-profit community based organization established in 1987, will receive a Youthbuild (YB) Implementation Grant in the amount of $650,000. CACDC has previously received YB awards in 1994, 1995, 1997 and 1998. It operated a program in 1996 although it was not funded by HUD. The organization's participant recruitment efforts are targeted to attract a group of young people ages 16-24, 75% of which are high school dropouts and are a member of very low-income families. A large portion of the participants are expected to come from the South George Street Planning District of York City. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. The 60 selected participants will also be learning on-site construction skills by working to rehabilitate a eight unit building owned by CACDC. Crispus Attucks YouthBuild has a residential component to its program, which will be expanded this year. The component will serve as an alternative to prison or as a post-corrections facility for non-violent young offenders. These young people will be referred to the program through the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. The total cost of the YouthBuild Boston program is $2,194,953. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $1,496,074 in support of this program. (PIC), Greensburg, PA a non-profit organization established in 1983, will receive a Youthbuild (YB) Implementation grant in the amount of $650,000. This is the first time the organization has received YB funding. PIC and its co-applicant, Westmoreland Human Opportunities will recruit applicants for the YB program from Westmoreland County, primarily the area surrounding the city of Greensburg. Their recruitment efforts are targeted to attract a group of young people ages 16-24, 75% of which are high school dropouts and are a member of very low-income families. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. The 29 selected participants will also be learning on-site construction skills by working to rehabilitate two single family residences. The total cost of the YouthBuild Boston program is $853,300. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $153,300 in support of this program.
