Youthbuild 1999 Grants: Project Summaries

West Virginia

Multi-County Action Against Poverty, Inc. Charleston, West Virginia will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $590,000. The 30 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build and rehabilitate 18 units of transitional housing for the homeless. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skill level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $151,654 to support the program. Key participants include: State of West Virginia, City of Charleston, WV, DAYMARK Inc., Charleston opportunities Industrial Center, Ohio-West Virginia YMCA Hi-Y Leadership Training Center, West Virginia Small Business Development, capitol Driving School, Legal Aid Society of Charleston, The Religious Coalition for Community Renewal, Covenant House, Charleston Men's Emergency Shelter, Mental Health Association in the Greater Kanawha Valley, Mattie V. Lee Home, Women's Health Center of West Virginia and the Governor's Cabinet on Children and Families.

The Southern Appalachian Labor School (SALS), Kincaid, WV: The Southern Appalachian Labor School (SALS) will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $650,000. SALS is a previous Youthbuild awardee. The proposed project is for a new class of 28 participants to rehabilitate four coal camp houses owned by SALS for very low income families. The project will provide educational services, leadership development and employment opportunities for the recruits. There will be site-based construction trainers, crafts people for specialty work, and sessions on workplace health and safety. The project will cooperate with the state's welfare-to-work program for their recruitment. Key partners: West Virginia Housing Development Fund (HOME/CHDO) and Corporation for National Service-Americorp.

Human Resources Development and Employment, Inc., Morgantown, WV will receive a Youthbuild Implementation Grant in the amount of $400,000. The 42 participants will be learning on-site construction skills by working to build a single-family home and two low-income apartments in the Morgantown area. The program will provide a comprehensive and integrated effort to increase the academic, leadership, and vocational skills level of trainees. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $129899 in support of this program. Key participants in the program include: Human Resources Development Foundation, Garrett Community College, Monongalia County Family Resource Network, Neighborhood Networks Center, National Alternative Fuels, Christian Help. Human Resources Development and Employment, Inc has received Youthbuild Implementation grants in the past.
