The Spartanburg (SC) Housing Authority currently is operating an FSS program that has thirty-three (33) active participants. The FSS Coordinator provides case management to all participates and has established working relationships with multiple agencies that provide assistance to enhance the economic self-sufficiency of the participants. Extensive community outreach is done by attending and speaking at meetings to enhance community awareness of the program and the need of involvement. The FSS Coordinator also provides participants with referrals for GED classes, seek employment opportunities, identifies volunteer opportunities that will enhance job skills and counsels participants on life skills.
Greenville HA --- $25,283
In Greenville County, SC, the Housing Authority has one (1) Self-Sufficiency case manager who provides case management for all of their family self-sufficiency families. Ninety-two (92) families from the Section 8 have already elected to join the FSS program; along with sixty-six (66) public housing families. The case manager is responsible for outreach for the program, administrating needs assessments, setting long-term and short-term goals, developing FSS contracts, coordinating supportive services, and implementing the Individual Training and Services Plan. Once the participant begins the program, the case manager follows up with the family, tracking their progress, verifying goal completions, and making referrals to Self-Sufficiency Programs partners. The need for additional staff is great to provide effective case management
The City of Charleston HA --- $40,170
The Housing Authority of the City of Charleston currently has 63 participants in the Family Self-Sufficiency Program. The Housing Authority offers programs through the Family Resource Center that allows for participants to identify and develop areas needed to help attain self-sufficiency. A weekly support group allow participates to work out social and mental health issues that may be deterrent factors. One of the major initiatives for this program is to help identify residents that may qualify for home ownership and refer them to appropriate resources. A grant funded Family-Sufficiency Coordinator provides coordination and implementation of all programs.
