RURAL HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FY2000 GRANTS

PROJECT SUMMARY

Michigan

Northern Lakes Economic Alliance in Boyne City will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development grant in the amount of $50,000. This capacity building award will assist in the creation of economic development in low-income communities and preserve the farming heritage of rural northern Michigan. The applicant will seek to hire an agricultural business development specialist. Some of the activities will be to promote outreach to local farmers and funding for an initial market study of crop and processing opportunities. The applicant proposes a three year plan to fulfill the project's objectives. Key partners include: Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, Northwest Michigan Work!, community colleges, banks, chambers of commerce, local units of government, utility companies, local businesses, U.S. Small Business Administration, Michigan Job Commission, Michigan State University and local unemployment agencies. Leveraging resources total $93,100 for this project.

Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, Nanistee will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development grant in the amount of $500,000. This Innovative Activities grant will be used by Little River Band's Living With the Land Housing and Community Development project. This project will seek to integrate and preserve existing natural habitats and to protect the natural environment. The objective of this project is to create the basis for a healthy community, one that includes affordable housing for low-income families and individuals, with emphasis on tribal members. The first phase of this project is to address infrastructure, roads, design and construction of 10-20 housing units. The housing initiative is part of NAHASDA Indian Housing Plan. The housing site was purchased by the Tribe and is now in the process of being placed in trust. Key partners include: National American Indian Housing Council and the Enterprise Foundation. Proposed leveraging is $214,000.
