RURAL HOUSIING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FY2000 GRANTS
PROJECT SUMMARY
North Dakota
The Fort Berthold Housing Authority in New Town will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $500,000. This innovative activities grant will allow the provision of technical assistance through direct financing for businesses through a revolving loan fund. Loan funds will be leveraged from the Independence Loan Fund for business development on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Before receiving loans, the participants will receive 70 hours of training in money management, job skills, development of business plans and business start-up. The anticipated results are: creation of 150 small business, 50 storefront businesses, and 200 microenterprises. Cash and in-kind leveraging total $679,120. Key participants include: the Three Affiliated Tribes, Fort Berthold Community College, City of New Town, Tribal Game and Fish Department, North Segment Community Development Department, Like-a-Fishhook Village Residence Consortium, KMHA Tribal Radio FM 913.3, Tribal Employment Rights Office, 4 Bears Casino and Lodge, Fort Berthold Enterprise Coalition, Job Service North Dakota, Tribal Tax Commission, Vietnam Veterans of America, Tribal 477 Program, North Dakota State University Extension Service and the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Times.

This capacity building grant will allow the development of an improved management information system for the administration and residents of the Fort Berthold Housing Authority and the ability to promote e-commerce for the economic development efforts of the Independence Program and Elbo Woods. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $679,120.
