RURAL HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FY2000 GRANTS

PROJECT SUMMARY

Nebraska

The Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District (NENEDD) in Norfolk will be receiving a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $500,000. The NENEDD is a regional non-profit organization that provides community and economic development services to 16 counties and the Santee Sioux Tribe Region. This innovative activities grant will assist their organization in the expansion of a pilot housing rehabilitation revolving loan fund for low income and very low income households in unincorporated areas of the northeast region. Additionally, they will create a microloan fund for small businesses starting up and expanding in the Santee Sioux Tribal region. Key partners First National Bank, Nebraska Housing Trust Fund, City of West Point, Clarkson Development Corporation, Rural Enterprise Assistance Program, and other businesses and organizations. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $650,000.

Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District will also receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development grant in the amount of $100,000. This capacity building grant will expand on their staffing needs to better serve the sixteen counties in northeast Nebraska. The objective to train staff and purchase computer equipment to meet the economic needs of their service areas. The service area is made up of 84 communities - 81 of these have populations less than 2,500 and 47 have populations of less than 500. This organization provides the local officials with the capacity to better serve their citizens and help businesses compete in the world economy by linking them to resources at the federal, state and local levels. Key partners are Elkhorn Valley Community Development Corporation and the Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska. Leveraging resources total $80,000 for this project.
