The Waccamaw-Siouan Development Association, Inc. in Bolton will receive a Rural and Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $50,000. This capacity building grant will be used to facilitate the development of a five year housing and economic development plan for the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe. Activities will include staff training, developing a survey tool and increasing computer capacity. Proposed cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $67,104 in support of this project. Partners include the Small Business Center at Southeastern Community College, North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs, Regional Council of Governments, area service providers and several local government agencies.

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) located in Cherokee will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $500,000. This innovative activities grant will be used to physically expand and renovate the Tsali Manor Nutrition Center located on the Reservation. The construction of more space will allow the Tribe to address the needs of its elderly population. Preventative care programs dealing with blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol screening will be enhanced and space will be available for a variety of community activities including public hearings and continuing education classes. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $363,000 in support of this project. Partners include: Qualla Housing Authority, EBCI Transit, Tribal Building Inspections, Emergency Management Services, Cherokee Health Delivery and Tribal Facility Management.

The Lumbee Regional Development Association, Inc. (LRDA) located in Pembroke/ Robeston County will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $50,000. This capacity building grant will be used to assist the Lumbee Indian Tribe in providing affordable housing for low and moderate income families. Activities will include staff training, developing a survey tool and assessing the Tribe's computer capacity. These efforts will result in the development of a five year housing and economic plan. Proposed cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $210,727 in support of this project. LRDA plans to create a housing consortium with area services providers to coordinate various housing and social programs. Partners include: Joint Venture for Affordable Housing, Inc., County Council On Aging, the Salvation Army, Regional Planning Council, Habitat for Humanity and local area banks.

The East Tarboro-Princeville Community Development Corporation in Tarboro will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Grant in the amount of $200,000. The CDC was formed in response to the devastation caused by the flooding of the Tar River. With this seed support grant, the CDC will be able to staff up and help thousands of families, farms and businesses. Development plans include the purchase of land to develop 150 for-sale houses, 2 apartment complexes, a community center and a strip shopping center. The projects will create 415 jobs and add over $40 million to the economy. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $795,000 in support of this project. Key partners include: North Carolina Housing Finance Agency, North Carolina Association of CDC's, Community Reinvestment Association of CDC's, Community Reinvestment of North Carolina, BB&T Bank, Centura Bank, North Carolina Community Development Initiative, North Carolina Low Income Housing Coalition, North Carolina Division of Community Assistance and the North Carolina Rural Center.
