RURAL HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FY2000 GRANTS

PROJECT SUMMARY

Ohio

The Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development in Athens will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $105,904. This innovative activities grant will address the design work necessary before straw bale and other innovative construction techniques. It will also address the housing affordability crisis facing Athens County and the Appalachian region. The applicant proposes to utilize straw bales and produce material which will be used in home construction, in place of the traditional frame dry wall approach or be used as an infill. The partners will include all three CHODs serving Athens County, a variety of USDA Rural Development Specialist and local developers. In-kind leveraging resources total $53,742.

Adams-Brown Counties Economic Opportunities, Inc. (ABCEOI) in Georgetown will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $73,538. This capacity building grant will strengthen the capacity of the agency's Housing/Energy Department's staff, greatly increasing the number of housing units that the Department produces on an annual basis. The increase in staff will enable ABCEOI to develop a 50 family housing complex in Adams County. ABCEOI serves Adams and Brown Counties in rural south-central Ohio. Adams County has been designated as a distressed County by the Appalachian Regional Commission. ABCEOI has committed $48,200 in agency funds to this project. Cooperating agencies include: the Corporation for Appalachian Development, the Ohio Department of Development, Fifth Third Bank of Southern Ohio, Adams County Commissioners, and the Office of Community Development.
