Oklahoma

The Alabama/Quassarte Tribal Town in Henryetta will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $50,000. This capacity building grant will support the hiring of staff, training, conducting a needs assessment, acquiring the necessary software, developing a comprehensive accounting system, and initiating a long-term strategic economic development plan. Leveraging resources from the organization total $12,930 in support of this project.

The MODOC Tribe of Oklahoma in Miami Ottawa will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $50,000. This capacity building grant will support the preparation of a Master Development Plan for the construction of rural housing on a 144 acre tract of land. The Plan will also support new functions and provide guidance to the Tribe and Housing Authority perform other governmental actions such as improved management practices; resource allocation; conduct of needs assessments; and arrange technical assistance. It will provide a coherent road map for on-going actions, such as construction and operation of much needed housing for Tribal members. Leveraging resources from the MODOC Tribe total $100,000 in support of this project. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is a key partner in support of this project.

The Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $360,000. This support for innovative activities grant will fund the development of a model home using alternative building methods that can be reproduced and maintained at a feasible cost. In the first phase of the project, the Tribe will contract with three construction companies, each of which will construct a model home using a different alternative method. During the second phase, a "Force Account" crew employed by the Cherokee Nation will construct a fourth home using the model that is selected to be the most practical and feasible. The Force Account crew will then be charged with the responsibility of renovating and replacing existing homes using the newly developed alternative construction method. The project will serve five economically distressed counties in the Tribe's jurisdictional area: Craig, Mayes, Delaware, Cherokee, and Adair. The tribe will leverage this grant with $150,000 in Indian Housing Block Grant funds. The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation is a key partner in this project.
