PROJECT SUMMARY

South Dakota

Oti Kaga, Inc. in Eagle Butte will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $100,000. This capacity building grant will assist them in their efforts to provide decent housing at affordable costs to the residents of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. Over the years, they have been involved in loan packaging that, to date, amounted to $885,910. Key partners include: Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, the Cheyenne River Housing Authority, South Dakota State University Cheyenne River Extension Service, Sacred Heart Center, Cheyenne River Counseling Service, Department of Health and Human Services, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Transportation, City of Eagle Butte. Leveraging resource total $106,783 for this project.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Partnership for Housing, Inc. in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development grant in the amount of $50,000. This capacity building grant will be of assistance to this organization in their efforts to increase staffing and diversify its sources of funding. They are now in Phase II of their goal to construct 25 new homes and using a variety of innovative approaches to reduce development costs and sales prices. This grant will help in hiring staff, receiving training on LIHTC housing development, technical assistance, and training on project financing, etc. Partners in this efforts are the Lakota Fund, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Oglala Sioux (Lakota) Housing, Oglala Oyate Woitancan as well as other state and local officials. Leveraging resources total $77,500 for this project.

The Rosebud Sioux Tribe in Rosebud will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development grant in the amount of $227,000. This seed support grant will enable this Tribal group to pursue economic development issues that create job opportunities and improve the financial and social well being of tribal members. The Rosebud Economic Development Corporation proposes to engage the tribal community in technological related enterprises. They will provide training individuals to build and repair computer systems. This venture will open opportunities on the Reservation as well as worldwide in the technology field for its members. The training for its participants will help build economic growth both on the Reservation and locally. Partners in this endeavor are School District No. 66-1, Sinte Gleska University, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the State of South Dakota. Leveraging resources total $107,500 for this project.
