PROJECT SUMMARY

Tennessee

Creative Compassion, Inc. in Crossville will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $100,000. This capacity building grant will help triple the organization's capacity to provide affordable housing for homeownership for low income families. The funds will also enhance its long-term capacity to effectively provide comprehensive housing assistance to low income families in Cumberland and Fentress Counties. Leveraging resources total $1,480,952 for this project. Key participants include: Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises, Highland Federal Saving & Loan, First National Bank of Cumberlands, Union Planters Bank, and the Housing Assistance Council.

The Buffalo Valley, Inc. in Hohenwald, Tennessee will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $50,000. This capacity building grant will assist in hiring a full-time Housing Coordinator to manage housing units and verify the eligibility of the residents. Key leveraging participants for this project include federal, state, and local government.

The Community Development Corporation of Northeast Tennessee in Johnson City will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $498,150. This support for innovative activities grant will initiate a microenterprise program in Johnson County, one of the Appalachian Regional Commission's "distressed counties." As a result of this project, 5 to 10 people will complete business development training, provide loans for business development, and help start or expand local businesses. Leveraging resources total $160, 500 in support of this project. The key partner for this project is the Levi Strauss Foundation.

The Eastern Eight Community Development Corporation in Johnson City will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $239,000. This seed support grant will provide funding for the development of accounting systems and the hiring of financial staff for the organization's central office. Leverage resources total $127,340 for this project. Key participants include: East Tennessee State Univerity, Bristol, and Johnson City.

The Douglas Cherokee Economic Authority in Morristown, Tennessee will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $459,069. This support for innovative activities grant will result in the creation of the Appalachian Consortium for Economic Development. In addition, 300 manufacturing jobs will be created in eight rural distressed counties in Tennessee and Kentucky. Leveraging resources total $152,440. Key participants include: Knoxville Utilities Board, WSJK-Public TV, Volunteer Housing Corporation, and Grainger County.
