The Community Development Corporation of Brownsville will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $500,000. This innovative activities grant will expand bank mortgage lending through a Community Financial Development Institution (CDFI) to rural and colonia families previously unable to access credit. A minimum of 44 homes will be built over the next two years to replace substandard and dilapidated dwellings. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $1,794,038. Key partners include: Greater Brownsville Community Development Corporation, Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, the Greater Brownsville Multibank Community Development Corporation, Youthbuild Brownsville and several minority contractors.

The Middle Rio Grande Development Foundation Futuro Communities, Inc., Carrizo Springs, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $199,117. This seed support grant will be used for a Business Service Center. Services will include training, loan packaging, outreach, marketing and promotion, peer/mentor assistance, research, resource and referral assistance. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $132,219 for this project. Key partners include: ACCION Texas and the Small Business Development Center.

The Rio Grande Valley Empowerment Zone Corporation in Mercedes will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development grant in the amount of $600,000. This innovative activities grant will be used to expand their existing community investment fund to assist rural communities, attract business, support affordable homeownership, and promote business development in a rural area that spans four counties, Cameron, Hidalgo Star and Willacy. The purpose of their project is to address the unemployment and poverty rate problems and to increase affordable housing opportunities. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $3,491,500. Key partners include: University of Texas (Pan -American's One Stop Capital Shop), City of Port Isabel, Amigos Del Valle, Inc., City National Bank, Council for South Texas Economic Progress other local governments, and other businesses and organizations that support this endeavor.

The Community Action Council of South Texas, Rio Grande City will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $183,483. This support for innovative activities Grant will support the Colonias Self-Help Housing Opportunity Project. The purpose of the Project is to assist low income residents of the Rio Grande Valley Empowerment Zone to improve their housing conditions by performing rehabilitation, reconstruction and home shell completion work to produce safe, sanitary and structurally sound homes that will comply with applicable local codes and ordinances. Cash and in-kind leveraging resources total $1,663,664 in support of this project. Partners include: International Bank of Commerce, Texas State Bank, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Global Volunteers and Colonias Unidas.
