The Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development in Olympia will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $183,483. This innovative activities grant will help provide low interest loans and leveraging mechanisms to growers for infrastructure and housing for farmworkers. The project includes $15,145,383 in matching funds and $57,700,000 in potential financial leverage. Key participants include: Washington State Department of community Trade and Economic Development, Washington State Department of Health, Washington State Public Works Board, Washington Community Development Loan Fund, Washington Community Reinvestment Association, One-Stop Development Center, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Rural Development.

The Washington State Housing Finance Commission, based in Seattle, will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $183,483. This support for innovative activities grant will support the Rural Homebuyer Education and Housing Counseling Program. The objectives of this program are to increase the number of first-time homebuyer education classes in rural parts of Washington State and to increase the level of housing counseling services available in rural areas. The ultimate goal is to create new homeowners and keep more families in their homes in order to enhance the economic stability of rural parts of Washington State. Leveraging resources from the Washington State Housing Finance Commission total $476,076.

The Northwest Regional Facilitators in Spokane will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $187,350. This seed support grant will enable six small, frontier rural organizations to increase their capacity to develop or expand their ability to operate housing rehabilitation programs in very small communities. The organization will provide intensive training workshops, a web-based peer learning and networking environment and resource library, one-on-one expert mentoring, and organizational operating support. Representatives of small, rural communities/organizations seeking to rehabilitate existing substandard dwellings, which are occupied by low income owners, renters or first time homebuyers will receive training and work collaboratively under the direction of an experienced rehabilitation/homeowership program administrator and technical assistance provider to develop or expand locally based programs and local and regional resources.

Leveraging resources total $27,350 for this project. Key participants include: Washington State Department of Trade & Economic Development, Blue Mountain Action Council, Joint City of Republic-Ferry County Housing Authority, Okanogan County Community Action Council, Lincoln County Housing Authority, Upper Valley Mend, and City of Newport.

The Spokane Indian Housing Authority in Wellpinit will receive a Rural Housing and Economic Development Grant in the amount of $500,000. This support for innovative activities will support the development of an 80 acre parcel of into a planned unit development with community water and sewer. The land is adjacent to a current housing cluster served by community water and individual septic systems. This project will make available 40 platted buildable home sites for use by individual Tribal members. The proposed new infrastructure will tie into and upgrade the existing infrastructure as well as the abandonment of the existing home individual septic systems. Leveraging resources total $400,000 for this project. A key partner supporting this project is the Tri-County Economic Development District.
