Martinez Names Jimenez HUD's New Chief of Staff

WASHINGTON - Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mel Martinez today announced Frank R. Jimenez will become the Department's new Chief of Staff effective June 10, 2002. Jimenez will help to manage more than 9,000 employees and a $30 billion budget. With a strong emphasis on community renewal and neighborhood redevelopment, he will also oversee the hundreds of HUD programs designed to increase homeownership, create affordable housing opportunities for low-income Americans, and support the homeless, elderly, people with disabilities and people living with AIDS.

"Frank is an energetic, talented executive with the broad background and the foresight necessary to meet the daily challenges facing the Department," said Martinez. "His tremendous responsibilities as Deputy Chief of Staff to Florida Governor Jeb Bush have more than prepared him to become a member of this team."

As the Governor's Deputy Chief of Staff, Jimenez had oversight responsibilities at various times for the Departments of Transportation, Business and Professional Regulation, Environmental Protection, Community Affairs, Elder Affairs, and Health, as well as the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Division of Emergency Management. He also took a lead role in increasing minority business spending in the Governor's agencies by 160% over two years through extensive outreach and matchmaking. Jimenez previously served as the Governor's Acting General Counsel.

A graduate of the University of Miami, Jimenez received a bachelor's degree in biology. He received his law degree in 1991 from the Yale Law School. Prior to joining the Governor's office in Tallahassee, he was a commercial litigation partner in the Miami law firm of Steel Hector and Davis.

Jimenez replaces Rob Woodson Jr., who recently returned to the private sector.
