The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Wednesday a grant has been awarded to the city of Birmingham to aid in the revitalization of three neighborhoods on the west side of the city.
The $50 million grant is a part of the HUD Choice Neighborhoods Implementation (CNI) Grant program and will be used to revitalize the Smithfield, College Hills, and Graymont neighborhoods. HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge was joined by Rep. Terri Sewell, Mayor Randall Woodfin, and other community members at a press conference.

HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge announced this morning that Birmingham had received a $50 million federal grant that the city plans to use to kickstart a $294 million investment in the Graymont, Smithfield and College Hills neighborhoods, providing 1,000 subsidized, affordable and market-value homes to replace the 900 units of the aging Smithfield Court.

PITTSBURGH — The Bedford Dwellings Housing Complex in the city's Hill District neighborhood has received a $50 million neighborhood revitalization grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. U.S. Rep. Summer Lee, D-12th District, made the announcement Friday along with U.S. Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman.
The funds from the Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant will be used to rehabilitate affordable housing at Bedford Dwellings, and make investments into the low-income neighborhood.

Pittsburgh's oldest public housing community will be demolished to make room for a new vision of affordable housing, after the Housing Authority of City of Pittsburgh won a coveted federal grant, according to three Congress members representing Pennsylvania.

The Lake Charles Housing Authority will be named the recipient today of $40 million in Choice Neighborhood Implementation grant money from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The federal funding will go towards the redevelopment of the Lloyd Oaks-Dixy Drive public housing family site in the mid-city neighborhood. It will fund people-focused programs, housing construction and neighborhood projects to improve and redevelop the 37-acre area — which includes Barbe Elementary School, the Lloyd Oaks public housing community, and residential properties by Dixie Drive and Creole, Lake and West 18th streets.
