Success Story Description
In an effort to serve as many citizens as possible, the County of Montgomery, Texas, chose to utilize a portion of their funding to construct large multi-purpose Community Development Centers at the far corners of the 1000-square-mile County. The Centers house social services for low-income families, seniors, and youth.
Montgomery County completed The West Montgomery County Community Development Center in 2001. In 2004, Montgomery County completed a second center, The East Montgomery County Community Development Center. Among the programs housed in this newer facility are:
- A senior center, where local seniors can participate in activities and enjoy a hot meal;
- An office for victims of domestic violence, where counseling and mentoring are available for victims of this serious crime;
- An after-school and summer program for children and youth, provided through a partnership with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of America, anticipated to serve 150 children in the summer of 2004;
- The East Montgomery County Community Clinic for low-income citizens, the most highly valued asset of the center, helping to bring medical care to citizens who have never before had a clinic available to them in their local area.
The West Montgomery County Community Development Center served over 60,000 citizens in 2003. Because the East Montgomery County Community Development Center just officially opened its doors on April 14, 2004, the number of people served is not yet available; however, it is expected to serve thousands of citizens for years to come.
Montgomery County, Texas has taken a donated pasture and turned it into a crown jewel that will improve the quality of life for the entire community.
