Success Story Description

Lakeview Elementary School is located in a low-income census tract consisting of 76.11% low- and moderate-income residents (1990 census). The purpose of the project was to provide running water and functioning bathrooms to an Early Childhood Education (ECEAP) classroom located on the school grounds.

Upon completion of the project, out-of-building bathroom use was reduced by 100%, thereby increasing teaching time by 60 hours per school year. Hand washing among students and staff was increased by 50%, decreasing the opportunity for germs spreading among ECEAP students. The project also facilitated the on-going dental hygiene program through the availability of running water for tooth brushing.

Overall, the students' families benefited from having a sanitary, convenient parent center for the ECEAP social worker to meet individually with parents for purposes of enrolling students, creating family plans, and conducting impromptu counseling. In addition, the project allowed the convenient use of the center's bathrooms and kitchen by approximately 500 people annually (50 students and their families per month) during family dinner events held in the ECEAP Center, which help to promote family unity and parenting skills.
