The panelists will focus on how to effectively utilize Section 108 and EDI funding; the facilitation of loan pools that are used for development purposes; and the overlapping economic development tools often available to communities from state and local agencies.

HUD’s Appraisal Reform Initiative

HUD’s Homebuyer Protection Plan will benefit 800,000 families who get Federal Housing Administration mortgages each year by dramatically reinventing FHA's home appraisal process. This session provides and overview of these critical reforms and how they affect homebuyers, appraisers, and lenders.
 
Integrating Lead Hazard Control with Community Development Activities

This session will explore creative ways of integrating lead hazard control with a variety of health and housing related programs which occur in the community. The emphasis will be on identifying cost-effective strategies designed to reduce or eliminate lead-based paint hazards in housing occupied by young children in a manner that strengthens the total community development effort.

Lease Enforcement "One Strike and You’re Out" Policies

This session will outline the "One-Strike" admissions screening and lease enforcement policies that PHAs and owners implement in an effort to maintain and foster safety and security for families living in public and assisted housing communities. Under the Public Housing Reform Act, HUD is requiring PHAs to develop and implement enhanced admissions and lease enforcement policies in consultation with residents. This session will feature the required and discretionary policies that PHAs and private landlords will implement for the public housing and Section 8 programs, as well as the responsibilities and obligations of applicants and recipients of federal housing assistance. Participants will hear how PHAs screen applicants of federal housing assistance to build safe neighborhoods for families and children and to eliminate illegal drug and criminal activity, violent crime, and alcohol and drug abuse.

This session will focus on ways organizations can help senior residents and those persons with special needs have an easy transition from independent living to assisted living. This session will also examine the growing demand for quality facilities dedicated to the care of persons suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

This workshop will provide examples on how to establish a reading/mentoring program using children and the elderly. The session will also provide examples of the full range of resources available. These resources can be provided from the residents, schools, community, public and private programs, and businesses. The session will also provide steps on how to establish a successful range of resident services by surveying the needs of the residents.
